FATHER DAMIEN, SS. CC.
Apostle of the Lepers

1840-1889

Father Damien DeVeuster, SS. CC., born at Tremelo, Belgium, January 3rd, 1840, entered the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts at the age of 20 years, and was sent as a missionary to the Hawaiian Islands.  After nine years of apostolic work, he obtained permission, in 1873, to labor among the unfortunate lepers of Molokai.  Having been attacked by the disease, he died April 15, 1889, a victim of his charity for all others.

Father Damien has countless admirers all over the world.  Confident of his intercession with God, they turn to him in their spiritual and temporal needs, especially in time of sickness.  Without wishing in any way to anticipate the judgment of Holy Mother Church, we can safely say that many have had their confidence justified.

All the information on this page, the writing above and the following Novena to the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary is taken from the booklet "Total Involvement!" from the Office of Father Damien's Cause for Sainthood at Adams Street, Fairhaven, MA 02719-0111
