Damien the Leper Society Gratefully Celebrates 30 Years of Transformative Service to Vietnamese Leper Communities
DESTIN, FL – SEPTEMBER 25, 2025 – Damien the Leper Society (DLS), a cornerstone of
hope for individuals affected by Hansen’s Disease (leprosy) in Vietnam, gratefully
commemorates its 30th anniversary of impactful, compassionate service. Established in 1995,
DLS has relentlessly delivered essential care and holistic support to these underserved
communities across Vietnam.
“For three decades, DLS has been a lifeline, providing medical care, sanitation facilities, food,
clothing, and safe housing to those affected by leprosy,” said Richard Castellano, President of
the Board of Directors. “Despite limited financial resources, the unwavering commitment of our
volunteers and donors has enabled us to meet the diverse needs of these vulnerable
individuals.
“Deep-seated medical and social problems remain within Vietnam’s leper populations,”
continued Mr. Castellano. “Experts from the World Health Organization agree that these
problems are best served through community-based approaches, which is exactly the way that
DLS functions.”
Since its founding, DLS has established community-based clinics, improved wound care
protocols, and expanded access to critical medications. DLS also has built safe housing,
provided food and clothing, constructed water sanitation systems, offered transportation and
scholarships for school-age children and developed self-sufficiency programs to empower
individual independence. Additionally, DLS has created orphanages for children whose parents
are unable to care for them due to poverty, significant disfigurement or severe illness.
“I am deeply grateful to our dedicated volunteers and generous donors,” said Father Viet Huynh,
DLS founder. “Their collective talents, determination and faith are responsible for this important
milestone of three decades of service. Together, and through the grace of God, we have
transformed countless lives for the better.”
Understanding Hansen’s Disease Today
Hansen’s Disease, commonly known as leprosy, remains a global health challenge. Despite
advancements in treatment, such as Novartis’ multi-drug treatment (MDT), Vietnam, until
recently ranked 14th worldwide in leprosy prevalence. Factors like isolation and poor sanitation
perpetuate the disease, underscoring the critical need for the purpose of DLS.
Inspired by Saint Damien, Committed to Cultural Sensitivity
Guided by the legacy of Saint Damien of Molokai, who devoted his life to serving those with
leprosy, DLS delivers care with compassion and respect for the heritage of Vietnam. By
collaborating closely with local communities, DLS ensures aid is delivered in a culturally
sensitive manner, preserving important traditions and fostering resilience.
Credibility and Call to Action
As a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization, DLS ensures all donations are fully tax-deductible.
